DTF RIP software and nesting
RIP software and nesting software are often confused. They do different jobs and happen at different steps.
What a RIP does
A RIP (raster image processor) turns your artwork into the data the printer prints. Typical jobs are converting files to raster images, color management with ICC profiles, and controlling the white ink layer and underbase. Some RIPs also include layout or nesting tools.
What nesting does
Nesting decides where each design goes on the sheet so the batch uses little film, and it keeps track of which piece belongs to which order. It does not manage ink or color.
Where DTFNest fits
DTFNest comes before the RIP. It outputs a 300 DPI transparent PNG at the exact sheet size, a numbered cut map and a CSV. You import that PNG into your RIP or printer software like any other image, then print as usual. DTFNest does not do color management or white ink control.
Commonly used options
- CADlink Digital Factory. CADlink describes Digital Factory as DTF RIP software with file preparation, color management and production automation tools. See cadlink.com for current editions and licensing.
- AcroRIP. A RIP that resellers offer for DTF and DTG printers. Buy through an authorized reseller and confirm the current version for your printer.
- xTool Studio. xTool's software for operating the xTool Apparel Printer; you import images with File > Import Image. See the xTool printer page for DTFNest's settings for that printer.
Which one you use depends on your printer and what it supports. Check the printer maker's documentation first.
